Which charging networks actually work?

A 350 kW charger that will not start a session is slower than a 50 kW one that will. Reliability, not power, is what separates the networks.

What actually goes wrong

Research into public charging user experience [2] and charging behaviour [1] finds the same pattern that any EV owner will recognise: the problems are rarely about how fast the charger is. They are about whether the session starts at all.

  • Payment or authentication failure. The card is not recognised, the app cannot reach the backend, the session will not initiate.
  • Occupied but not charging. A finished car left plugged in, which is why idle fees exist.
  • Broken and not reported. A unit shows available in the app and is not.
  • Queue with no system. No formal queueing at most sites, which becomes a social problem at busy times.
  • Power sharing. Two cars on a shared cabinet each get half, which the app rarely tells you in advance.

Crossing borders

Which network is most reliable?
It varies by country and changes as hardware is replaced. Stall count and contactless acceptance are better proxies than brand.
Why did my card not work?
Most often a roaming agreement gap rather than a fault. Carrying a second provider is cheap insurance.
Do I need a subscription for reliability?
No. Subscriptions affect price, not whether the hardware works.
Should I trust the app availability?
Treat it as a hint. Always know your fallback.
