Reliability
Which charging networks actually work?
A 350 kW charger that will not start a session is slower than a 50 kW one that will. Reliability, not power, is what separates the networks.
What actually goes wrong
Research into public charging user experience [2] and charging behaviour [1] finds the same pattern that any EV owner will recognise: the problems are rarely about how fast the charger is. They are about whether the session starts at all.
- Payment or authentication failure. The card is not recognised, the app cannot reach the backend, the session will not initiate.
- Occupied but not charging. A finished car left plugged in, which is why idle fees exist.
- Broken and not reported. A unit shows available in the app and is not.
- Queue with no system. No formal queueing at most sites, which becomes a social problem at busy times.
- Power sharing. Two cars on a shared cabinet each get half, which the app rarely tells you in advance.
Charging reliability and user experience
How to judge a network
| Factor | Why it matters more than it looks |
|---|---|
| Stall count per site | Redundancy. One broken unit out of six is an inconvenience; out of two it is a problem. |
| Payment options | Contactless bank card acceptance is the best single predictor of a session starting. |
| Live availability accuracy | A network whose app is wrong is worse than one with no app. |
| Siting | Lit, staffed, with facilities. Matters enormously at night and with children. |
| Peak power | Real, and the least discriminating factor between mainstream networks. |
Crossing borders
Roaming agreements determine whether a card issued in one country authenticates in another, and they are not universal. Before a cross-border trip, check that your provider covers the operators on your route — or carry a second card. Our country-by-country guide covers what differs where.
